What are Ceramic Foam Filter Sheets?

Ceramic foam filter sheets are porous ceramic materials made primarily from alumina, silicon carbide, or zirconium oxide. They possess a three-dimensional, interconnected open-pore structure, resembling a sponge in appearance. Their porosity is typically between 75% and 90%, with uniform pore size, characterized by PPI (pores per inch). Due to their unique structure, ceramic foam filter sheets maintain good mechanical strength and chemical stability even at high temperatures, exhibiting excellent thermal shock resistance. They are widely used in the purification of molten metal.

Applications of Ceramic Foam Filter Sheets

In application, ceramic foam filter sheets are primarily installed in gating systems to filter inclusions in aluminum alloys, copper alloys, cast iron, and some molten steel. When molten metal passes through the filter sheet, non-metallic inclusions, oxide films, and fine impurities are effectively trapped. Simultaneously, the molten metal flow changes from turbulent to a relatively stable laminar flow state, thereby reducing secondary oxidation and gas entrainment. This not only significantly improves the density and surface quality of castings but also reduces casting defects such as porosity, slag inclusions, and shrinkage cavities, increasing the yield.

In aluminum and aluminum alloy casting, ceramic foam filters are one of the key functional materials for improving casting quality, and are commonly used in the production of automotive parts, aerospace structural components, and high-end industrial castings. In the fields of copper alloys and ductile iron, their application can effectively improve microstructure uniformity and mechanical properties. Different materials and pore sizes of filters can be selected for different metal systems and pouring temperatures to meet the balance requirements between filtration efficiency and flow capacity.
