Refractory Cement Or Refractory Mortar For Caulking The Lining Of Ball Mill?

For caulking the lining of a ball mill, refractory mortar is generally recommended over refractory cement. The reasons are as follows:

1. Different bonding properties

Refractory mortar is specifically designed for laying and caulking refractory bricks and linings. It has excellent plasticity and bonding properties, filling brick joints and ensuring overall tightness.

Refractory cement (usually high-alumina cement) is primarily used in preparing castables or refractory concrete. It has a high shrinkage rate and is prone to cracking or falling off when used directly as caulking.

2. Ease of construction

Refractory mortar can be used simply by adding water and mixing. It provides a good fit between bricks during construction.

Using refractory cement directly for caulking is difficult, difficult to apply in thin layers, and prone to hollowing.

3. Operational reliability

Due to vibration and impact during ball mill operation, the brick joints must be uniform and dense. Refractory mortar can effectively buffer stress.

While refractory cement has high bonding strength, it is susceptible to failure under thermal shock and mechanical vibration.

Conclusion:

Ball mill lining caulking should be done with refractory mortar, not simply refractory cement. If increased strength is required, refractory cement or admixtures can be added to the mortar in appropriate amounts, but a complete replacement with refractory cement is not recommended.
