Magnesia Bricks for Reverberatory Furnace Linings

Magnesia (MgO) bricks are essential refractory materials for reverberatory furnaces in non-ferrous metal smelting due to their high melting point (>2800°C) and excellent resistance to basic slag corrosion.

Sidewall Applications: Below the slag line, where molten slag attacks aggressively, magnesia-chrome bricks are preferred for their resistance to chemical corrosion and structural spalling. These bricks protect critical areas around burners and tapholes.

Bottom Construction: The furnace bottom requires dense burned magnesia bricks that withstand both the molten charge weight and metal penetration. These bricks provide stable foundation and resist iron oxide attack through solid solution absorption.

Roof Applications: Modern suspended roofs utilize magnesia-alumina bricks containing 85% MgO and 5-10% Al₂O₃. These form magnesium-aluminate spinel during firing, offering superior thermal shock resistance (20-25 water cooling cycles) compared to ordinary magnesia bricks. They withstand load softening up to 1690°C while resisting alkaline dust and iron oxide attack.

When properly selected for each zone—chrome-magnesia for sidewalls, dense magnesia for bottoms, and magnesia-alumina for roofs—these refractories ensure optimal furnace performance and extended service life.
