Geralmente, o seu comprimento \u00e9 centenas de vezes superior ao seu di\u00e2metro, e \u00e9 normalmente produzido pelo m\u00e9todo da fase gasosa. Os comp\u00f3sitos nanocer\u00e2micos podem geralmente ser divididos em tr\u00eas categorias: nanocomp\u00f3sitos intragranulares, intergranulares e nano\/nanocomp\u00f3sitos. As part\u00edculas \u00e0 escala nanom\u00e9trica dos dois primeiros tipos de nanocomp\u00f3sitos est\u00e3o principalmente dispersas dentro ou entre os gr\u00e3os da matriz e o seu principal objetivo \u00e9 melhorar as propriedades mec\u00e2nicas a altas temperaturas. Os nano\/nanocomp\u00f3sitos s\u00e3o compostos por dispers\u00f5es nanom\u00e9tricas e gr\u00e3os da matriz, com o objetivo de acrescentar novas fun\u00e7\u00f5es \u00e0s cer\u00e2micas, como a processabilidade e a superplasticidade. O tamanho do gr\u00e3o, a largura dos limites do gr\u00e3o, a distribui\u00e7\u00e3o da segunda fase, o tamanho dos poros e dos defeitos dos materiais comp\u00f3sitos nanocer\u00e2micos est\u00e3o limitados ao n\u00edvel de 100 nm. A mudan\u00e7a na composi\u00e7\u00e3o causa uma mudan\u00e7a gradual no desempenho (ou fun\u00e7\u00e3o) do material. Este material \u00e9 o chamado material de gradiente de desempenho (chamado material funcional inclinado no Jap\u00e3o). Trata-se de um novo material desenvolvido pelo Jap\u00e3o em meados da d\u00e9cada de 1980. O material de gradiente de desempenho \u00e9 um material de relaxamento da tens\u00e3o t\u00e9rmica. Foi desenvolvido para aplica\u00e7\u00f5es pr\u00e1ticas que requerem que um lado do material seja resistente ao calor e \u00e0 oxida\u00e7\u00e3o, enquanto o outro lado (lado frio) deve ser resistente e capaz de aliviar e suportar o stress t\u00e9rmico.
