Ils constituent un mat\u00e9riau potentiel de haute performance qui peut remplacer les mat\u00e9riaux m\u00e9talliques et \u00eatre utilis\u00e9 dans des environnements difficiles. Toutefois, en raison de la fragilit\u00e9 inh\u00e9rente aux mat\u00e9riaux c\u00e9ramiques, leur champ d'application pratique est limit\u00e9. En g\u00e9n\u00e9ral, leur longueur est des centaines de fois sup\u00e9rieure \u00e0 leur diam\u00e8tre, et elles sont habituellement cultiv\u00e9es par la m\u00e9thode de la phase gazeuse. Les whiskers pr\u00e9sentent peu de d\u00e9fauts, de sorte que leur r\u00e9sistance m\u00e9canique est tr\u00e8s \u00e9lev\u00e9e, et leur r\u00e9sistance \u00e0 la traction peut \u00eatre proche de la r\u00e9sistance th\u00e9orique des cristaux purs. La r\u00e9sistance des whiskers est \u00e9troitement li\u00e9e \u00e0 leur \u00e9paisseur. Les composites nanoc\u00e9ramiques peuvent g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement \u00eatre divis\u00e9s en trois cat\u00e9gories : les nanocomposites intragranulaires, les nanocomposites intergranulaires et les nanocomposites\/nanocomposites. Les particules nanom\u00e9triques des deux premiers types de nanocomposites sont principalement dispers\u00e9es \u00e0 l'int\u00e9rieur ou entre les grains de la matrice, et leur principal objectif est d'am\u00e9liorer les propri\u00e9t\u00e9s m\u00e9caniques \u00e0 haute temp\u00e9rature. Les nanocomposites sont compos\u00e9s de dispersions \u00e0 l'\u00e9chelle nanom\u00e9trique et de grains de matrice, dans le but d'ajouter certaines nouvelles fonctions aux c\u00e9ramiques, telles que l'aptitude \u00e0 la transformation et la superplasticit\u00e9. La taille des grains, la largeur des limites des grains, la distribution de la seconde phase, la taille des pores et des d\u00e9fauts des mat\u00e9riaux composites nanoc\u00e9ramiques sont limit\u00e9es \u00e0 100 nm. Le changement de composition entra\u00eene un changement progressif des performances (ou de la fonction) du mat\u00e9riau. Ce mat\u00e9riau est un mat\u00e9riau \u00e0 gradient de performance (appel\u00e9 mat\u00e9riau fonctionnel inclin\u00e9 au Japon). Il s'agit d'un nouveau mat\u00e9riau d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 par le Japon au milieu des ann\u00e9es 1980. Le mat\u00e9riau \u00e0 gradient de performance est un mat\u00e9riau de relaxation des contraintes thermiques. Il est d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 pour des applications pratiques qui exigent qu'une face du mat\u00e9riau soit r\u00e9sistante \u00e0 la chaleur et \u00e0 l'oxydation, tandis que l'autre face (la face froide) doit \u00eatre r\u00e9sistante et capable de soulager et de supporter les contraintes thermiques.
