Generalmente, su longitud es cientos de veces su di\u00e1metro, y suelen crecer por el m\u00e9todo de fase gaseosa. Los bigotes tienen pocos defectos, por lo que su resistencia mec\u00e1nica es muy alta, y su resistencia a la tracci\u00f3n puede acercarse a la resistencia te\u00f3rica de los cristales puros. Los compuestos nanocer\u00e1micos pueden dividirse en tres categor\u00edas: intragranulares, intergranulares y nano\/nanocompuestos. Las part\u00edculas a nanoescala de los dos primeros tipos de nanocompuestos se dispersan principalmente dentro o entre los granos de la matriz, y su principal objetivo es mejorar las propiedades mec\u00e1nicas a alta temperatura. Los nano\/nanocompuestos se componen de dispersiones a nanoescala y granos de matriz, con el objetivo de a\u00f1adir ciertas funciones nuevas a la cer\u00e1mica, como la procesabilidad y la superplasticidad. El tama\u00f1o del grano, la anchura del l\u00edmite del grano, la distribuci\u00f3n de la segunda fase, el tama\u00f1o de los poros y los defectos de los materiales compuestos nanocer\u00e1micos est\u00e1n limitados al nivel de 100 nm. El cambio en la composici\u00f3n provoca un cambio gradual en el rendimiento (o funci\u00f3n) del material. Este material es uno de los llamados materiales con gradiente de rendimiento (denominados materiales funcionales inclinados en Jap\u00f3n). Se trata de un nuevo material desarrollado por Jap\u00f3n a mediados de la d\u00e9cada de 1980. El material de gradiente de rendimiento es un material de relajaci\u00f3n de tensiones t\u00e9rmicas. Se desarrolla para aplicaciones pr\u00e1cticas que requieren que una cara del material sea resistente al calor y a la oxidaci\u00f3n, mientras que la otra cara (cara fr\u00eda) debe ser resistente y poder aliviar y soportar la tensi\u00f3n t\u00e9rmica.
